Welcome to Ngcobo, the heartbeat of the traditional Eastern Cape and a home to many of South Africa’s finest liberation icons. Ngcobo is located in the central part of the Chris Hani District Municipality. The main urban area is Ngcobo Town, which is located in the center of the municipal area, along R61 from Mthatha, linking R408 to Idutywa and R58 to Elliot. Ngcobo is named after a local sweetgrass. Ngcobo is a place where time stands still and the past merges with the present. Where culture, heritage, and outstanding natural beauty combine to create a truly exquisite picture of rolling mountains, steep passes, and hectares of pristine natural forests. Ngcobo is one of the few places left that offers visitors a glimpse into South Africa’s diverse cultures, heritage, and natural beauty. The town is surrounded by rural villages, communal grazing land, natural forests, and planted forests; the northeastern part of the municipality is mountainous and is sparsely populated.
The Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality is a category B municipality with 20 Wards and 39 councillors. There are 20 wards and 19 party representatives. The municipality has 6 standing committees: Corporate Services, Infrastructure, IPED, SPU, BTO, and Waste and Refuse. There are also Section 79 Committees: MPAC, Rules Committee, Public Participation, and Women’s Caucus. All 39 councillors are serving on their respective committees. The importance of having these committees in a local municipality lies in ensuring good governance, accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery. These structures are established under the Municipal Structures Act and Municipal Systems Act, and they play specific and complementary roles in the administration of local government, personally and professionally.

HISTORY AND HERITAGE
- Historical Treasures and Struggle sites: Engcobo is home to many finest liberation Icons like Dr A.B Xuma, Tat’u Walter Sisulu, Tatu James “Castro” Kati and many more. Luhewini MK Base Camp, Clarkebury Boarding Institute lists the likes of Tat’ uNelson Mandela Dr AB Xuma.
- Engcobo Heroes Park: Engcobo Heroes Park: listed many well-known South African Leaders and Liberation stalwarts were either born or educated in Ngcobo. They are recognised and commemorated at Engcobo Heroes Park which has memorial wall engraved with names of liberation Icons and the DR AB Xuma and Tatu Walter Sisulu life size statues with their biographies.
- Clarkebury Institution an educational institution established in 1830 by the Methodist Church missionaries on the invitation by King Vusani kaNdaba, the founder of the abaThembu nation. The institution lists the likes of the late Dr. N. Mandela and Dr. A.B. Xuma (and many others) as its students and were greatly influenced by the school’s strong sense of social responsibility.
- King Vusani KaNdaba (Aha -a-a-a Ngubengcuka) Monument : the monument of the late King Ngubengcuka of AbaThembu at Tyeni location the first person to introduce Methodist Church missionaries in the Eastern Cape and also founder of Clarkebury in 1830’s.
- Rock Art: Engcobo is one of the places where Rock Art Paintings has been discovered in different areas like Elucwecwe, Sinqumeni, Khalinyanga, Nkwenkwezi documenting the Khoisan as the earliest inhabitants of the area.
- Arts and Culture: the area has people who are passionate in craft, beadwork, cultural dance and artist of different genres (maskhandi, hip-hop, gospel singers, pop stars etc.) Some of the artist have home studios to produce and manage other artist.
- Quluqu Mass Grave: a historic site with a monument that lists the names of the people who were struck by lightning whilst hosting a traditional ceremony dating back in 1934, these people were all buried on the site.
